21st Churches Annual Sponsored Walk for BCU Life Skills Centre

Walkes on BCU's Sponsored Walk

The 21st Sponsored Walk took place on 26th April 2014 and 30 people walked the route this year.

Pledges on the day totalled £8,820 and we hope that the grand total will exceed this amount, as in previous years. Our most grateful thanks must go to the 'Friends' of Bexley Centre for their superb organisation of the event once more and in particular to George and Rheta Birchall, without whose enthusiasm and commitment the walk would not be able take place

The Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Sharon Massey, David Evennett, MP and the Chair of BCU, Trish Giles all gave short speeches of support and Reverend Adam Foot kindly said a prayer for the well-being of the walkers. The News shopper took photos as the walkers started on their way and this year more than 20 people walked all or part of a northern route, through Welling, Belvedere and Erith. Our thanks go to Reverend Jane Edwards and her helpers at All Saints Church, Belvedere and to Brother Brian and the helpers at Our Lady of the Angels Church, Northumberland Heath for providing refreshments for the Walkers. The weather was perfect for walking and everyone agreed it was a thoroughly enjoyable event.

We finished back at Pincott Hall, Christ Church for refreshments kindly prepared by Ellen Ewen and Debbie Cottington. Our thanks go to Reverend Sue Twyname for her support in allowing us to use the hall.

The Centre, along with many local voluntary organisations, is struggling financially but we are optimistic that we will be able to continue providing services to our local community. We have been successful with funding applications during the past year and have been awarded grants by the Yapp Charitable Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation. Asda in Bexleyheath have supported us with refreshments for our fundraising events. We are making applications for this current year and we are, of course, extremely grateful to all of our supporters. Our new website address is www.bculifeskills.org.uk
